A New Generation

I only knew a handful of you during one of my favorite life moments: Playing Maria in Kennedy Middle School's production of The Sound of Music. But my love for anything related to Julie Andrews, nuns, and puppets started long before the age of 13.

I have loved the movie ever since I can remember. Every Easter it would come on TV and I would watch the whole thing, dancing around like Gretl in the Gazebo, and swirling on my own living room hill, singing "The Hills are Alive..." (Thanks, Mom, for letting me stay up past my bedtime to watch it!)

It is one of the only movies that I know pretty much all the lines. So when it came on TV a few weeks ago, I couldn't pass it up. Brad, Ty and I watched and watched, and I was amazed that Ty fell in love with it, too! His favorite is the "Flibbertigibbet song," but he was entranced for the whole thing. When I cried at the end when they climb to their freedom, he was very curious. I told him it was just a happy cry. Now when he's crying for real, he says it's just a happy cry, in between sobs!

Since I had the CD in my collection but had never played it for Ty, he quickly played it over and over at bedtime. Soon, he knew all the words, too! When I saw the movie for two bucks at the thrift store, I couldn't resist!

And that is how our home--and some very public places--have been filled with the magic of the Sound of Music once more! We find ourselves singing those songs all over town, in our head, anywhere!

  1. Oh the musicals! They always remind me of staying up late with Grandma Forsgren and watching them. It's good to start it with a new generation.

My favorite is "How do you solve a problem like Maria." My mom used to hum that when we was "frusterated" at me. :)

  2. That is so sweet that Tyler loves it too. (Didn't you wear one of my old prom dresses as a costume in one of the scenes?)

  3. You were a great Maria! I think its so cool that Tyler shares your love for it, too! How fun! I love the photos from the play- who are the boy characters? I don't recognize them! Is one David Thomas? The other one looks like Andy Derenfield (sp?) but I could be wrong and I just don't remember! Wow, what a trip down memory lane!

  4. Who knew? Yet I could've guessed. The perfect Maria.

Way to share the joy Sal! It is adorable to hear Ty singing those songs.

  5. I would have loved to have known you back in your middle school days. We had some fun times in high school though! I love that movie too! We took our kids to see it at the local high school a few years ago. So fun! Our copy of the movie was destroyed by an unidentified Gold kid. I will be searching the thrift stores now! Great idea.

  7. Your post brought back such fun memories of watching you in the play...although *two* distinct moments seem to shine above the others---can you guess what they are??

He sang it for me this weekend. He did great. I could not believe the expression in his voice.
It is great you are exposing him to many different types of music.
Thanks for sharing him with me.
    Love, Grandma F.

  9. How great is that!

I loved the Sound of Music and have watched it so many times that I've lost track. Yet another thing we have in common...

  10. Tyler is sooo cute. That little boy just soaks everything up like a sponge. "It's just a happy cry." Classic.
I like the idea from the comment of singing "How do you solve a problem like Maria" when I'm frustrated with my kids. The song I am a Child of God wasn't quite working for me because it doesn't come to mind in the heat of the moment I guess. This song will be perfect!!! I'm glad I found your blog.
